Research & Projects

Research Overview

RealBlackfoot supports interdisciplinary research that strengthens understanding of Indigenous histories, cultural heritage, and contemporary issues affecting Indigenous communities. Our work connects Indigenous knowledge systems with academic research methods to address questions related to cultural heritage, historical justice, and community-based research.

Through collaborative and ethically grounded research practices, RealBlackfoot contributes to projects that support Indigenous communities in protecting cultural knowledge, documenting history, and advancing community priorities.

Current Research Areas

Indigenous Cultural Heritage and Historical Landscapes

RealBlackfoot conducts research supporting the documentation and protection of Indigenous cultural heritage. This work examines the relationships between Indigenous histories, cultural landscapes, and traditional knowledge systems.

Research in this area focuses on how cultural heritage sites, historical records, and oral traditions contribute to a deeper understanding of Indigenous presence and continuity across traditional territories.

Forensic and Biological Anthropology

Research conducted through RealBlackfoot draws on forensic and biological anthropology to explore how scientific methods can contribute to understanding historical trauma, violence, and health within Indigenous populations.

This work includes examining osteological evidence, historical records, and interdisciplinary data to better understand how past events have shaped Indigenous communities and histories.

Historical Justice and Missing Indigenous Peoples

RealBlackfoot is engaged in research examining issues related to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP) and broader patterns of violence affecting Indigenous communities. This research explores historical, social, and systemic factors that contribute to these issues while emphasizing the importance of community-led approaches to awareness, prevention, and justice.

Indigenous Research Methodologies

RealBlackfoot prioritizes research approaches that respect Indigenous knowledge systems and community authority. This includes collaborative research models that involve Indigenous communities in shaping research questions, methods, and outcomes.

These approaches ensure that research contributes meaningfully to communities while respecting cultural protocols and ethical standards.

Developing Projects

RealBlackfoot continues to develop research initiatives that bring together anthropology, history, and Indigenous knowledge systems.

These projects include:

• Research exploring Indigenous cultural heritage and historical landscapes
• Interdisciplinary studies connecting anthropology and Indigenous knowledge
• Research addressing contemporary issues affecting Indigenous communities
• Collaborative projects with Indigenous communities and researchers

As RealBlackfoot grows, this section will continue to highlight new projects, partnerships, and research initiatives.

Collaboration and Partnerships

RealBlackfoot welcomes collaboration with Indigenous communities, researchers, institutions, and organizations working in areas related to Indigenous heritage, anthropology, and interdisciplinary research.

Through collaboration, RealBlackfoot seeks to support research that is respectful, community-centered, and grounded in both Indigenous knowledge and academic scholarship.
